Kleinsmith Dobermans

Welcome!

At Kleinsmith Dobermans we are passionate about our dogs and this breed. We breed first for quality health then proper structure and temperament follow. Producing health, longevity and beauty is our goal. The Doberman is a strong and athletic dog with an elegant yet intimidating look. Despite this, they are goofy and, at the same time, incredibly smart. Our goal is to give you an understanding of this breed and what it entails to own and love one.

About Kleinsmith Dobermans

We are a small breeder in Northern Indiana, and if you are interested in owning a puppy from us— welcome! My name is Clare Kleinsmith. Animals have always been my passion, especially dogs. I have been working with them professionally for over a decade. I have always admired the Doberman. Bringing our beautiful girl Zara home in 2021 was a dream come true. She is such an amazing dog and a stellar example of the breed. We are so grateful to continue our dream as we begin our breeding journey and develop our line of puppies. We aim to keep our bloodlines European. We know Zara will not let us down in giving us puppies with those signature European features. We hope you find the information you are looking for here. Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or if you would like to submit a formal inquiry.

The Exceptional Bella Zara CGC

Zara - our foundation bitch and an absolute shining example of this breed. She has a strong working drive, willingness to please and is so loving and gentle. She has been trained in rally obedience and obtained her CGC title in january of 2023. All of her health testing  has been completed and she passed with flying colors. She is of 100% European bloodlines. Her lineage includes Pride of Russia Dobermans and also the well known Altobello Dobermans. We will increase the genetic diversity with our pairings and also hold to that stunning european look that we love.

Breeding plans for Zara are TBD rightnow so we can put you on reservation list if you want one of our puppies.

Puppies will be allowed to go home at 8 weeks old. You may choose to have natural ears or cropped on your puppy. They will be show style crops, tails will be docked and dew claws removed. Puppies will be on a limited AKC registration. Full AKC registration may be requested for approval.

Health Testing

The following diseases/conditions are commonly found in the Doberman Pinscher. Many people do not know that different breeds are affected by so many genetic illnesses. We test our dogs for all of the following and make sure they are genetically clear through special DNA testing sent out to a lab via a cheek swab and through other various tests preformed by our Veterinarian. We follow the DPCA recommended testing.  It is important to support and purchase puppies from breeders who invest in their dogs so we can better this breed and its longevity.

  • DCM 1 & 2 (Dilated Cardiomyopathy)

DCM is a disease of a dog's heart muscle and results in an enlarged heart. As the heart and its chambers become dilated, it becomes harder for the heart to pump, and heart valves may leak, which can lead to a buildup of fluids in the chest and abdomen (congestive heart failure). life expectancy after diagnosis is 6-24 months. a yearly holter monitor test and echocardiograph by cardioligst helps to monitor that our dogs heart is healthy and working properly. We also make sure to genetically test via DNA cheek swab to show our dogs are cleared for this. though there are other factors that can cause this disease like diet, etc. we strive to continue our practices of breed preservation through our program.

  • Thyroid - Liver - Kidneys

A full blood work panel is done by the veterinarian making sure all organs, bodily functions and hormones are working properly including but not limited to hypothyroidism, liver or kidney diseases, cancers.

  •  OFA Elbows and Hips

  • An Xray is preformed on our dogs by our vet and then sent to the orthopedic foundation of America for a scoring of pass or fail basically. this ensures that the dog being bred does not have any signs of hip or elbow dysplasia. we wait until the dog is 24months to do these xrays because there body is fully developed at this point and would show signs either.

  • Von Willebrand disease (VWD)
is a lifelong bleeding disorder in which your blood doesn't clot properly. People with the disease have low levels of von Willebrand factor, a protein that helps blood clot, or the protein doesn't perform as it should. it is tested for via genetic testing to show if the dog is clear, carrier or affected.

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy

(also known as generalized progressive retinal atrophy or GPRA     describes an inherited disease of dogs that causes slowly progressive blindness over a period of months or years. Genetic Eye Examinations: OFA Eye Certification exams (previously “CERF” exams) are screening examinations performed by board certified veterinary ophthalmologists in order to identify changes within the eye(s) suggesting the presence of one or more of these diseases.

  • DINGS (also known as DVDob or vestibular deafness)

in Dobermans is a congenital (heritable) disease characterized by deafness combined with vestibular dysfunction that is expected to affect approximately 13% of all Dobermans. it is genetically tested for via DNA cheek swab sent to the lab.
